Learn how to play drums from a professional drummer

I'm not just a drummer; I'm a dedicated music educator with a passion for helping students discover the joy of playing. My teaching qualifications include:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from Eastern Washington University

  • Master's work at the University of Montana

  • 10 years of experience teaching competitive high school drum lines.

  • Current Drum Instructor and Drum Line Coach at Gonzaga University! Go Bulldogs!

On top of all of my education I have been playing and touring for the past 15 years NONSTOP! I've been fortune to  play every style you can imagine. I've done musicals, professional orchestras, jazz big bands, country music, latin groups, funk bands, an everything in between.

How to start learning drums?

The first thing I teach my students is beat number one on the BASIC DRUM GROOVES PDF, which you can download free.

We take the groove 1 note at a time so students can efficiently connect playing their feet with their hands slowly.

Next we learn a basic 4 note fill on the snare, then end on a crash, and repeat! In minutes most students are grooving along to a practice track.

Are Drums Hard to Learn?

Most of my students I have playing a basic beat by the end of their FIRST LESSON! Students often learn how to play their first song by the end of the month.

I have a BASIC DRUM BEAT PDF you can download for free right here!

How much do drum lessons cost?

Tuition for my drum school starts at $150 for a weekly 30 minute lesson.

I charge the same amount every month whether there are 5 lessons or 4 lessons. Sometimes you will get three lessons due a student being sick, scheduling conflicts, or holidays.

I am really good about making arrangements for make up lessons if you know about schedule changes in advance. I want all my students to come in each week because then. . . they get better!

Cancelations within 24 hours of your lessons forfeit your lesson that week.

Can I learn to play drums without a drum set?

YES! Drums are sometimes very expensive and let's face it. . .noisy. Many of my students start just playing on a practice pad and learning how to read sheet music, learning rudiments, and basic drum technique to get them started.

This is a great way to make sure your student "sticks with it" before investing in a set of acoustic or electric drums.

How much should I practice drums?

How long does it take to learn the drums? That all depends on how much you practice.

For me, I would like my beginning students and younger students (age 8-12) to practice 30 minutes 3-4 times a week.

My intermediate students and high school students should try to practice for an hour 3-4 times a week.

Lastly, if you want to play drums professionally you should have sticks in hands for 6 hours a day as many days a week as you can. There are so many things to learn to be able function as a professional drummer that it does take that much time.

They say that to become an expert at something you need at least 10,000 hours of practice to get there.

Kids learn to play drums like a pro!

The video says it all! I take my students through the process of writing and recording their very own song! Where else can you take drum lessons and learn to play like a pro at ANY AGE.

Whether you are a total noob or a seasoned professional I have information you need to take your playing to the next level.
